Teeth whitening

You may not realise it, but your smile is the second thing that people look at when they first meet you (after your eyes). It is no wonder that people place so much importance on an attractive smile. Every day we meet people who are not satisfied with the appearance of their own smile.

At Notley Dental Care we offer Zoom in-house Whitening and Home Teeth Whitening to patients in the Godalming, Guildford and surrounding Surrey areas.

If you want to find out which technique is suitable for you we offer a complimentary whitening consultation with our dentists. Please do not hesitate to contact us on 01483 417102.

What is Tooth Whitening?

Tooth whitening alters the aesthetic properties of the teeth to give you a brighter, whiter smile. With time your teeth naturally darken, becoming more yellow and grey. Years or drinking tea, coffee, red wine and smoking also stain the teeth. These stains build up inside the teeth, so no matter how many times you brush your teeth, or see a dental hygienist, the teeth will continue to darken with time.

Now with our tooth whitening procedures you can reverse this process, making your smile brighter, whiter and more youthful. The process actually removes those internal stains.

What stages are involved in Zoom Laser Teeth Whitening?

Zoom in-chair laser whitening, also called Power Whitening, is available at Notley Dental Care. This procedure is very simple and takes 90 minutes. We cover your lips and gums, leaving only the teeth exposed, a special gel is then applied. This works in conjunction with the state-of-the-art Zoom power light system to penetrate the teeth, breaking up stains and any discoloration.

It is safe, effective and with proper care your smile could sparkle for years. We recommend boosting and maintaining the result with our home whitening kit that is included in the price. The maintenance whitening kit that you will be given to use at home includes custom made whitening trays and whitening gel.
During procedures likes these our DVD goggles are very popular giving you a chance to watch your favourite movies.

What stages are involved in Home Whitening?

Two appointments are necessary before your home whitening can begin. The first (which can be combined with your free whitening consultation) is when we take the impressions for your custom made whitening trays. By having them custom made and not using a pre-made tray we can ensure that your trays are an excellent fit and therefore the whitening gel reaches its full potential when in your mouth.

At the second appointment we fit your whitening trays for you, showing you how to insert and remove them easily and demonstrating how to use the whitening gel safely, effectively and in the correct quantity. We also provide you with comprehensive written instructions to refer to when you are at home.

We recommend that you wear your trays with the whitening gel for a minimum of 4 hours per day over a period of 2 to 4 weeks depending on the desired result. For optimum performance the tooth whitening can be carried out overnight while you sleep as your whitening trays are perfectly safe to sleep in. After you have carried out the whitening at home your dentist will review you to check how much your teeth have lightened. If the desired effect has been achieved we would then discontinue the treatment, or recommended whitening for another week if necessary.

What results can I expect from Teeth Whitening?

We guarantee that we can significantly whiten your teeth, however some types of tooth discolouration respond much better than others. The general yellow discolouration that appears with age responds the quickest. Grey colours will respond well, but will normally require a longer treatment period to achieve best results. A small number of people possess developmental defects within their teeth which result in discolouration which may not respond well to tooth whitening treatments. In this situation alternative options are available. Regardless of your existing tooth colour a consultation with a cosmetic dentist is normally required prior to any whitening.

What kind of maintenance will I need?

This is an essential part of the whitening process. This will not only stabilise the in office whitening process, but will allow you to maintain a bright white smile. Maintenance requirements will vary from a couple of days a month to a couple of days every six months. For this you will need to use the custom made whitening trays we have provided you. We are so confident you will be delighted with your smile.

Is Whitening safe?

The tooth whitening process has been tested and used clinically for many years (both in the UK and USA), and has proved to be safe and effective when whitening teeth. The majority of dentists agree that this procedure is one of the most conservative ways to alter your smile. Some short-term sensitivity of the teeth to cold following the procedure is common, although with most modern systems this normally resolves within a few days, or can be easily reversed by us if required.

How long does Teeth Whitening last?

After initial treatment the whitening effect will last 2-5 years depending on your life style, following which re-whitening is recommended. Alternative techniques are available, where you top up the treatment at home to maintain your desired shade of tooth colour. A top-up is always required in time, as you may continue to consume coffee, red wine and smoke, so your teeth start to darken again.

Is Tooth Whitening painful?

At Notley Dental Care you will receive an initial free consultation prior to the whitening, to determine the level of sensitivity and staining of your natural teeth and whether the treatment is suitable for each individual case.
Whitening carried out by our dental team includes additional benefits such as sensitivity prevention and fluoride advice. Some patients can experience temporary reversible sensitivity during the whitening procedures.
